Coffee consumption

Coffee400 billion (400,000,000,000)

It seems that if all other efforts to unify this planet of 7 billion fail, we can at least rally around our universal love of coffee.  According to the 2011 edition of the Coffee Statistics Report, coffee is the most popular beverage in the world with over 400 billion cups consumed each year.  That translates into a fairly sizable $47.5 billion market in the U.S. that is expected to increase by 23% to $58.3 billion by 2014.

Given that there’s about 100 mg of caffeine per cup of coffee, there’s little wonder why everyone seems so wound-up all the time (or perhaps we have other things on our minds.)
