AOL’s dial-up subscribers

AOL logoI am not sure that this is actually worthy of a heartfelt “WTF” or if it simply warrants an bewildered stare, but America Online (AOL) still has 3.5 million dial-up subscribers.  No, that is not a typo.  The decline from 2010 was only 630,000 subscribers compared to 5 million per year in 2006 and 2007 when many people fled to local access options such as cable Internet and DSL.  Based on AOL’s press release, the average tenure of paying subscribers was 10.6 years (up from 9.4 years in 2010) which suggests that only the faithful are continuing to pay the $17.50 monthly access fee.
